The Skyline was redesigned for 1999 with new bodywork, but same engine. This engine is a real issue. According to Nissan, it makes 277 bhp (Japanese cars are voluntarily limited to 278 bhp). First it is necessary to notice that the engine puts out 293 lb.-ft of torque, and has a horsepower peak of 6800 rpm. Not to say that's impossible, but normally a car with that number should make more horsepower than torque (the number, that is). I estimate some 320 hp or more. Another reason to believe such thing is power-to-weight ratio. The Skyline weights about 3600 lbs. which translates to a 13 lbs. per horsepower ratio. A car with such ratio is hardly going to make more than 100 mph in the standing 1/4 mile acceleration. This car does 103.5 seconds.
Well, another topic is availability. This car was not designed for the U.S. But Nissan seems to be interested in sending it (still in right-hand-drive form). If it comes it will cost about $85,000 which puts in in the leage of the Porsche 911 Carrera or even the Acura NSX. A company called MOTOREX brings the Skyline and other exotics to the US.
